Left to right, Doug Roper, Terry Roper, Andy Anderson (?), four unidentified scouts, Marvel Roper, Critch Bean and another leader (? Bean). This photo was probably taken behind the Ward Meetinghouse in Nephi, Utah. Marv was carving a neckerchief slide as he often did on scout outings.
Marvel Roper and Critch Bean (Scoutmasters) from different troops, cut out the pictured teepee in the church cultural hall and had a saddle maker sew it. (Marv remembers that saddle maker was a cripple guy in town, but doesn’t remember his name.) Critch was a big indian fan and found the pattern.
First time they camped out in the teepee they didn’t know about the lower inside smoke flaps. They later figured this out to use an inner smoke flap around the inner circumference of the teepee (six to eight feet high) spreading straw at the base, and keeping the outside bottom of the teepee about 12 inches off the ground.
Marv mentioned that the troops did not have many funds at the time and worked together with inexpensive ideas. The material for the teepee was acquired at low or no cost. The teepee poles were cut from a nearby forest with permission of the forest service.

Hi Terry, would like to know more about the Bean’s in this photo, I have Bean’s in my line as well.
During the 60s before I was born, my family lived in Nephi, UT. My father was scoutmaster and my two oldest brothers, Terry & Doug, were both in the ward scout troop. As a scoutmaster my father (Marv Roper) worked with the scoutmaster of another ward’s troop in town, Critch Bean was the scoutmaster of the other troop, I don’t think there is any relation. Terry was probably only 13 or 14 at the time. I’ll try to get more information from my father about “Critch” or other Beans they may have known in Nephi.
